Role: User Research, UX/UI design

Tools: Figma, Procreate, Miro

Outcome: Logo, Illustration, Responsive website

Introduction

Fit IV Life is a 24/7 fitness facility located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. They provide gym equipment, personal trainers and host athletic events and competitions for the local community.

A facebook page is their main online platform so the goal is to create a responsive website with a new logo to reflect their business.

Research

Competitive analysis, personas, surveys, and interviews were used in the research process to understand gym memberships and how similar local gyms are actively engaging their members.

Provisional personas were made to determine the types of people that would be at a local gym and to explore the perceived needs of these individuals.

Interview and Survey Insights

Questions asked during the interviews and surveys focused on benefits in a gym membership, facility usage habits, and physical health values.

“I first went to Fit IV Life with my friend and now I have my own membership.”

People that currently have a membership at Fit IV Life go because it is a 24/7 facility. People also tend attend gyms that their friends already go to.

A separate set of interview and survey questions were made for people who did not currently go to a gym to understand their perspectives on gyms.

“I can just work out at home with free youtube videos at my own pace and not feel pressure to look good at the gym.”

Most people could not afford a gym membership and having a busy schedule lacks time from the gym. Mixed answers about fitness as a priority were also mentioned.

Foundations

Three user personas were created to fully capture the varying insights based on the research. These helped me stay on track while creating my designs for the website and having the needs and goals of the personas in mind.

A flowchart was created to focus on what would be the main task for the usability testing and help as a guide in creating the final designs.

Wireframes

Low fidelity wireframe sketches of the homepage show enough info about the gym but also prioritizes call to actions like joining as a member. Both the Mid fidelity desktop and mobile versions were created in Figma based on the sketches. The layout is meant to be easy to navigate and have a responsive design.

Design

The logo created was made with Procreate and represents the gym’s message of promoting health and fitness to their community.

A User Interface kit was used as a guide for the website and set the tone for how the website would appear. Color palette, typography, font sizes, and other graphics were provided.

Usability Testing

During the usability testing, users were tasked to sign up as a member and instructed to choose a basic rate. This part of the test has the longest time duration for people to complete. Many people expressed that it was difficult to read and understand the plans with so many words on the cards. To combat this issue, I created some illustrations to help clarify the plans further.

These illustrations were made to help users distinguish the differences between membership rates. The rates were determined on how many people are included on each payment plan.

Prototype

This prototype is after the redesign and iteration based on usability testing results. It features joining Fit IV Life as a member and navigating through the website and what information is provided about the gym.

Next steps…

Some next steps I would take for this project are to improve navigation by adding more charts for clarity of membership benefits, more payments options on the checkout process, and add hours the gym is open on the landing page.
